Dust off your Dream

Title IX turns 40 this year. It should come as no surprise that I remember June 23, 1972,  the day it became law. I stood earnestly before the console TV and watched the news story. Girls playing sports! Naturally, my precocious nine year old self was anxious to be a benefactor of this new legislation. Sadly, I was in college before I played any organized sports.

She changed the face of Little League Baseball

My parental unit was of the ‘don’t rock the boat’ generation and change doesn’t come quickly in small town America. However, I was desperate to play little league baseball.  After College I coached little league softball. It was my way of being able to do what I had wanted since I was nine and the man on the news told me I could!

That’s the thing with dreams. They don’t die just because you weren’t allowed to do something. There comes a time when as an adult you MUST address those dreams! It may not be exactly the same dream. Maybe it is the grown up version of your childhood desire. I’m not saying that every childhood dream is worth pursuing, I also wanted to be a tennis player one summer, but some dreams are life long. They speak to who you are. Those dream need to find their way to fruition. Turn your dream into a goal!

Perhaps your dream was put on hold while you devoted time to your family. Perhaps you were side tracked from pursuing your dream career. What ever your dream, find a way to make it a goal. Goals are just dreams with legs. So dust off your dream and give it some legs.

We must Accept finite disappointment, but Never lose infinite HOPE

All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem. ~~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. It seemed appropriate to begin my post with a quote and this particular quote fit perfectly with my message. There are always obstacles to success.

Some obstacles are obvious; the friends who tempt you with cake while your dieting or monetary difficulties in purchasing equipment. However, some obstacles are unseen and therefore we are oft blindsided when they appear.

Two months ago I was blindsided by an obstacle. A health obstacle – I was already working on my goals for 2012 when everything and I do mean everything stopped while I dealt with my health issue. While I couldn’t act on pursuit of my goals, I never lost sight of them. As I sit here today I still am not able to act on my physical goals but I think of them everyday. I plan how I will accomplish them.

I’ll end for today where I began with a quote from Dr King: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Keep sight of your goal my friend!

What Gets You Out Of Bed In The Morning?

If you are like most of us, you get out of bed in the morning and go about your day doing your job. Perhaps you have convinced yourself that you work because you enjoy eating and having a roof over your head; but what if your work was as exciting as your play? What if your passion was aligned with your work? If this sounds like a good life, then you need to determine what your passion is.  According to a recent survey, about 75% of the population has not identified their passion in life. Plainly, just about everyone seems to not be doing what they were meant to do. This is a great revelation because doing what we really love is absolutely necessary if we want to be fully happy. Maybe this is why we have so many unhappy people!

So, that begs the question, what is your passion?

Here are a few steps that can help you identify you life’s passion.

What would you do for free?

So think about something that you would just love to do, even if you were not getting paid. Think about something that you look forward to doing, something that you wish you could do all the time.

What puts a smile on your face?

Think about something that you do or that perhaps you used to do that brings total peace to you when you do it. Peace is happiness, and happiness is passion.

What do you like to talk about?

The topics of conversation we have can definitely tell what we are interested in. You may not be aware of the topics you gravitate toward. So ask your friends! Ask them what topic makes your eyes brighten up, and changes your entire behavior. Try it out; it’s a very insightful exercise, and one that can direct you closer to figuring out your passion.

What do you find easy?

And don’t think that anything is off limits or impractical. Some people have taken their passion for skateboarding, drawing, or collecting to full fledged careers. Remember this; you can make a career out of anything you are passionate about.

Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.  ~~ Oprah Winfrey

Can you Catch your Dream?

Dream Catcher Lore:

Native American Dreamcatcher

Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and slide down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that he/she is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the first light of the new day. (per http://www.dream-catchers.org/)

In your waking moments you catch your dream by chasing after it. Dreams never come true just by dreaming them. You must begin following your dream. Put in the work to stay on the path. Then you can realize the achievement of your goal.

Build or tear down

Sometimes it seems the whole world is against us. We set out for greatness. We know what we want but then there is ‘that person’. That one person who speaks up to trample dreams, hopes or goals.

Ever wonder why they take such delight in being the voice of despair? Changes are they had a dream that was crushed or maybe they have just given up on their goals. Will you let their defeat cost you your dream?

Take a vow right now to be a dream builder and not a dream crusher. Decide that you are taking the initiative it may be a position that singles you out for praise or for criticism. Maybe the world around you will scoff at your dream or your ability to achieve it.

A blind boy paid his way to a Master’s Degree at Northwestern University by taking notes on class lectures in Braille, typing them, and selling copies to classmates who had stronger eyes but weak ambition. Do you have strong eyes or strong ambition?

The children’s saying says ‘Sticks and stones my break my bones but words can never hurt me’. Reality says words can build up or tear down. For those who have the will and ambition nothing can stop them.

Let us be your voice of praise and encouragement.
