Things are Getting Zippy

It is Saturday and the day I am to check in with you on my quest for average. I am happy and proud to report that I have been consistent with my walking! I walked Monday, Wednesday and Friday after lunch. I walked 1.1 miles each day and my time ranged from approximately 30 minutes on Monday to 24 minutes on Friday (I was puffing pretty hard after Friday’s walk).

I am sad to report that I did not add in any weight training this week. I experience some low back pain after walking, which I think is related to my surgery and my core muscles building back. I think I need to work those core muscles to help them strengthen.

Several years ago I bought an Ab Roller. It really did give me great abs and a flat stomach. I think it may be time to get that thing out of the closet and see if I can build up some muscles!

In December when I was still holding my insides in as I walked, I decided when I was better that I wanted to ride a Zipline as the true and final “I’m better” moment. I began calling it my Zip Quest. Little did I know at the time but there is actually a place called ZipQuest in Fayetteville (less than 2 hours from me). As soon as I began my research, they have been my goal! Well, this past week, I set my ZipQuest date – April 1st.

No Time Left For You

Lately I have been spending a lot of time spinning my wheels about time. Specifically I have been complaining about other people not valuing my time! My days have been filled with clients who do not send timely information then expect that I will be available to rush the work for them. Of friends who call in the middle of the day to ‘just chat’ about nothing. And then a family member who called for computer help and disrupted my ‘downtime’ only to abruptly say ‘let me call you back’ when another call came in. Unfortunately, I then waste more of my time fuming because ‘They don’t value my time’.

This morning I have had an epiphany!

Although I can not control how they see or value my time I can control access. I can control how much of my time I am willing to let someone else waste.

You see, just as I can not expect others to know how I feel, unless I tell them. I can not expect others to respect my time unless I create boundaries.

So here is my three steps I am going to try (film at 11 <grin>)

1. I am going to try the line: “If I take the time right now – as much as I would love to chat – it’s going to make me late for my rest of my day.” (Or something similar). Conversely, I am going to begin my daytime ‘dish sessions’ with friends by asking ‘Do you have time to talk?’

With one particular friend we have sent private messages, emails or text to ask ‘do you have time to talk’. Often we begin our conversations by sharing our time limit. Even if it’s just ‘I only have a few minutes’. Try it with your friends, co-workers, or even clients.

2. I am going to be clearer with my clients about what I need and the time-frame in which I need it. My problem client likes to ramble about how busy they are as an excuse for why they can not get me the information I need in a timely fashion. My bottom line has to be that I can not work late every week because of a lack of organization of their part.

3. I am going to remember that I am not obliged to answer my phone just because it rings.

Dont You Dare Give Up

Some days it seems as if everything in the world is going against you. A salmon swimming up stream has an easier time reaching her goal than you’re having reaching yours.

I wish I had wonderful and expert advice to help you through those days. I wish there was a magic pill I could offer you that would make it all easier and better. I don’t.

What I can tell you is….

As hockey legend Wayne Gretzky once noted, you will always miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.

You must continue, even on the worst of days, if you want to succeed. So today, run in the rain, walk even thought it’s cold, read (or write) that book, practice that instrument – do whatever it takes to move you closer to your achievement. If you don’t give up, tomorrow will be better!

We must Accept finite disappointment, but Never lose infinite HOPE

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. It seemed appropriate to begin my post with a quote and this particular quote fit perfectly with my message. There are always obstacles to success.

Some obstacles are obvious; the friends who tempt you with cake while your dieting or monetary difficulties in purchasing equipment. However, some obstacles are unseen and therefore we are oft blindsided when they appear.

Two months ago I was blindsided by an obstacle. A health obstacle – I was already working on my goals for 2012 when everything and I do mean everything stopped while I dealt with my health issue. While I couldn’t act on pursuit of my goals, I never lost sight of them. As I sit here today I still am not able to act on my physical goals but I think of them everyday. I plan how I will accomplish them.

I’ll end for today where I began with a quote from Dr King: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Keep sight of your goal my friend!

You’re in Charge

When I was a young adult and would go to my farther for advice, he would always end the conversation with ‘You’re in Charge’. Naturally, I believed he was talking about how much I should put in retirement, or if I should trade vehicles, or change jobs. Now that I am much older, I realize that his statement holds true for just about everything in life.

We ARE in charge!

We are in charge of our emotions; our successes and our failures. We are in charge of who we allow to upset us or how we derive joy.  No one controls our destiny but us!

Be Fearless

FEAR!  We all have it. We all are forced to face our fears from time to time. Whether it the spider who confronts you in your bedroom when no one else is around or the idea that something is wrong in your body and you fear life changing news. We all from time to time must face our fears.

How do you approach your fears?

I am embarrassed to report that recently I lived with, at times, excruciating pain for over two weeks because I was afraid of the diagnosis. My mind could imagine all sorts of truly life altering problems. Fortunately, once I faced my fear, the problem was relatively minor and easily fixed with medication. For many of us, this is how we face our fears. We avoid.

Last night I spent some time on the phone with a friend who was afraid. She was afraid of being alone outside on a night with little light. She imagined wild animals and bugs, she feared falling and being unable to have help. Was this an irrational fear? Probably, but it was nevertheless it was a fear that caused her to be unable to continue with what she needed to do.

How do you overcome fear?

1. Recognize the fear

2. Decide you are going to conquer the fear

3. Focus your attention

4. Step into the fear with abandon

5. Pat yourself on the back when it’s over

6. Notice how much easier it gets
