Milestones

We measure the progression of life by milestones. We count birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrate big on round numbers. We notice the odometer on our vehicles and ‘mark’ major round numbers (today my truck will pass 123,000). If you tweet, you probably notice your number of tweets or followers. And if you blog no doubt you notice the number of blog posts. A couple of days ago I wrote a post about my grandmother and knowing about the past. I was thrilled when I realized I had written that post on International Women’s Day. On the day I paid tribute to a strong matriarchal figure in my life was the same day we celebrated Women around the world. Then as things sometimes do, there was a The rest of the story

Who Knows only his own Generation remains always a child

No doubt you have heard the saying, ‘you can’t know where you are going unless you know where you have been’. I do believe that statement is true. I recently discovered the quote that is located in the Norlin Library at the University of Colorado, “Who Knows only his own Generation remains always a child.” This leads me to the topic of today’s post – My Grandmother. No doubt there are others who could possibly tell the story better or more fully but this is my story and my perspective. My grandma was Emily McKenzie. She was a Wright before she married and she grew up on Wright Mountain in West Virginia. She was born to a farming family in December of 1906. I don’t The rest of the story

It’s Public – Wash Your Hands (a rant)

Frequently on Tuesday nights I have dinner with a friend. We laugh, we talk, and this can (and often does) go on for hours! Last night was just such an occasion! It was a great time with an amazing friend! Nevertheless, as you might imagine after sitting in a restaurant for quite sometime, I needed to use the facilities. First let me say, I HATE PUBLIC RESTROOMS (there is nothing restful about them).  Often when I am forced to avail myself of these microcosms of germs and annoying people, I find at least one patron who DOESN’T WASH THEIR HANDS! How does anyone in this day and age of information not wash up after using a public restroom? Which takes me to my topic for today – The rest of the story

I don’t like worms (or morning people)

I am not a morning person! I prefer to stay up later and get up later. However after almost 14 years of living with a morning person, my ways have shifted and I rarely stay up too late (midnight or one is usually the latest) and am generally up before eight. And I definitely like to ease into my day. It is one of the reasons why working for myself as opposed to ‘the man’ works best for me. On a surprising note, I have discovered that I prefer to write in the morning. My thoughts seem clearer and I enjoy the solitude of the project. This morning while grousing about the overabundance of conversation before I had finished my morning ritual and made it The rest of the story

An Unexpected Treasure

2012/03/04 Gayle 0

Yesterday I attended the District meeting of UDC. The meeting was hosted by the Cape Fear Chapter and held at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC. After our meeting we were treated to a tour of the Church. It was an amazing treat. I had almost left my camera at home and I am glad I popped it into my bag at the last minute. The Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church has a history dating back to 1847. With this rich record it is surprising to find they are second oldest Methodist Church in Wilmington. There were so many interesting aspects of this unassuming exterior, including a connection to China’s Soong dynasty Uon entering the sanctuary I was amazed to find a The rest of the story
