Diabetes affects more than one in 10 Americans, and an estimated 366 million people worldwide and the global epidemic is getting worse with the numbers projected to keep climbing. The International Diabetes Federation described the number of cases as “staggering,” with one person dying from diabetes every seven seconds. According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine. [Jared Reis, et al., “Lifestyle factors and risk for new-onset diabetes: a population-based cohort study”] getting plenty of exercise—lowered the risk of developing diabetes by as much as 39 percent in women and 31 percent in men. Although I personally believe heredity is the risk factor I face, I am attempting to take the bull by the horns.  I am renewing my gym membership and making a conscience The rest of the story

Stop Sabotaging Your Mood

2011/09/13 Gayle 0

Want to solve a problem? You can improve your problem solving skills by inducing a positive mood. If you can get yourself to a positive mood, you can improve your cognitive flexibility. Sound crazy?  A 2010 study in Psychological Science shows that inducing a positive mood can improve one’s cognitive flexibility. The question then is how do you get into a good mood and how do you stay there? Probably if you really thought about it, you could find the ‘trigger’ got most bad moods. “Goals” are like “New Year’s resolutions”…frequently made but rarely accomplished. Are you struggling to achieve your goals? Then I have the key for you! STOP thinking of your goal as a goal! I know, you’re thinking ‘WHAT THE HECK?’ This is a blog all about goals and positive thinking and reaching for the stars. However, in our society most people describe a goal as “a lofty ambition,” something to “shoot for,” something to “strive for,” or something to “work toward’ and there is NOTHING wrong with any of that. Or is there? You see the descriptions we give the word “goal” implies your objective will be difficult to achieve. There is a subtle undertone crafted by the implicit meaning of your words telling you it’s just The rest of the story

Fungus Among Us

After Hurricane Irene passed through, I saw something I haven’t seen all summer, MUSHROOMS! I suppose there is something about 5-8 inches of rain after a summer of sever drought to pop ‘em outta the ground. Join me as I traverse my yard and enjoy the new visitors.
