Life’s A Beach

This is the story of two young men, two new Jeeps and one very sandy beach. It was a beautiful summer day and each young man had received a Jeep as a gift upon his graduation. Each was proud of his accomplishment and of the prize he had received for a job well done. Independently, each decided to take their new toy to the beach for a spin. It is at this point that the similarities stop.

Our first young man, lets call him Jim Bob, arrives at the beach. He stops at the entrance to assess which of the many ruts he wishes to follow (Lesson 1 – have a plan). After choosing, he carefully begins to follow the path and yet he becomes stuck (Lesson 2 – even a good plan can be faulty).  Immediately, he enlists the help of a kind soul also passing by to help him push his Jeep to get unstuck  (Lesson 3 – there is no shame in asking for help). Soon Jim Bob is on his way and he is able to enjoy the rest of his day.

Our second young man, lets call him Charles, also arrives at the beach. He is so very excited that he hardly slows to pop the Jeep in 4-wheel drive as he hits the sand. He soon finds that the rut he fell into is headed in a direction he does not wish to go. He has no choice but to ride across all the ruts to attempt to find the one, which suits his path (Lesson 4 – the lack of a plan can make the journey harder and rougher than it has to be). Unfortunately, even though Charles has finally found the right path, he becomes stuck (Lesson 5 – everyone is stuck sometime). Because Charles is already frustrated, he begins to push harder on the gas in his attempts to become unstuck, which only succeeds in burying him deeper in the sand (Lesson 6 – actions of frustration only make things worse). Eventually Charles has to call a tow-truck to get him and his truck off the beach. The bill is expensive and he did not enjoy his day at all.

At some point in our lives we will become stuck. We can spin our wheels in anger and frustration, which will only chip away at our confidence. Alternatively, we can realize we need a push to become unstuck and we can continue almost without missing a step.

Do you feel that your life, career, health, weight, etc has become stuck? Are you a little stuck or are you mired up to the axels? Either way, you CAN become unstuck. Being stuck is a habit; a complacency. When you are complacent (i.e. stuck) you are not moving forward. If you are not moving forward, life is passing you by.

Decide today to get unstuck and start to enjoy your life.

Tomorrow, Six steps to getting unstuck.
