It’s Public – Wash Your Hands (a rant)

Frequently on Tuesday nights I have dinner with a friend. We laugh, we talk, and this can (and often does) go on for hours! Last night was just such an occasion! It was a great time with an amazing friend! Nevertheless, as you might imagine after sitting in a restaurant for quite sometime, I needed to use the facilities. First let me say, I HATE PUBLIC RESTROOMS (there is nothing restful about them).  Often when I am forced to avail myself of these microcosms of germs and annoying people, I find at least one patron who DOESN’T WASH THEIR HANDS! How does anyone in this day and age of information not wash up after using a public restroom? Which takes me to my topic for today – The rest of the story

I don’t like worms (or morning people)

I am not a morning person! I prefer to stay up later and get up later. However after almost 14 years of living with a morning person, my ways have shifted and I rarely stay up too late (midnight or one is usually the latest) and am generally up before eight. And I definitely like to ease into my day. It is one of the reasons why working for myself as opposed to ‘the man’ works best for me. On a surprising note, I have discovered that I prefer to write in the morning. My thoughts seem clearer and I enjoy the solitude of the project. An Unexpected Treasure

Yesterday I attended the District meeting of UDC. The meeting was hosted by the Cape Fear Chapter and held at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC. After our meeting we were treated to a tour of the Church. It was an amazing treat. I had almost left my camera at home and I am glad I popped it into my bag at the last minute. The Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church has a history dating back to 1847. With this rich record it is surprising to find they are second oldest Methodist Church in Wilmington. There were so many interesting aspects of this unassuming exterior, including a connection to China’s Soong dynasty Uon entering the sanctuary I was amazed to find a The rest of the story

It’s Life not a Math Problem (or is it)

A few weeks ago I sat in my office and listened to Jenn tutoring math. The subject was either calculus or algebra, to be honest I wasn’t really paying attention, I was doing my own work. However, I suddenly hear Jenn ask, what do these triangles have in common. Before I could stop myself I shouted, ‘they’re both triangles’ and everyone laughed. Since that day I have considered how often I use math on a daily basis. As the kid who was once told by a teacher I was ‘too stupid’ to do math, I avoid the topic as much as possible. (Just for the record, thank to the encouragement of the next year’s teacher THIS ‘too stupid’ kid took and passed several advanced math The rest of the story

Today is the Day to make a Memory

Last night I was sharing a story with a friend. It is a story I have told over and over in the last 30-plus years but one I have not related here. In 1979 or 1980 my dad and I cut down an oak tree. I wish I could tell you more about the tree, but I really don’t remember. What I vividly remember is loading the logs onto a trailer pulled by my family red belly ford tractor and hauling the tree to the sawmill. The sawmill was run by an old man, Mr. Tuttle, who walked with the benefit of a cane. I can not recall how many days we worked with Mr. Tuttle, it may have only been one but we worked.
