Up Close and Personal with History

On Saturday February 25, 2012 we went to Cameron Art Museum for an event they call Civil War Living History. As a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, I have been taught that the correct term is not ‘Civil War’ but the ‘War Between the States’. The distinction being that The Confederate States of America had seceded before the war began. Thus the war was between two Independent countries. Like many Southerners, I oft refer to it as the “War of Northern Aggression’. No matter what you choose to call it, it was a troubled and defining time in our country. One that continues to fascinate and intrigue many people (including me); for that reason I attend many battle sites and events around this The rest of the story

Life Unplugged (at least from TV)

2012/02/27 Gayle 1

Like a lot of people these days, I enjoy looking at the fun and fanciful ideas on Pinterist. Tonight as I poked about looking at the variety of things, I was reminded that some times we need to unplug and relax. When I was a kid there was a lot of porch sitting, sweet tea drinking and relaxing after a hard day. My new project is to get my porch sit worthy! I’m adding in some comfy chairs, maybe a bench or two. Then I am going to indulge in end of the day relaxation. I am making something similar for my porch! It’s a Clear Morning

Today we are painting at my house. There are three rooms that have not been painted in the time we have lived here and it is time for the ugly colors to go! Then morning came and we again looked at the samples on the wall. THEY LOOKED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! Sure it was The rest of the story

Living like a Dog

If you know anything at about me, you probably know I love dogs. I have loved dogs since my very first encounter with them. There are so many things I love about them – not the least of which is their innate ability to live with abandon! A dog will throw everything they have into chasing a ball, or their own tail. They are eager to please and quick to forgive. This week one of mine was sick. Long story short, he had eaten something he shouldn’t (a sock). However as soon as he eliminated the source of his sickness, he immediately began to live life to its fullest. It was as if he had no recollection of the days he spent lethargic and ill. What is your Cause?

2012/02/21 Gayle 0

A few days ago a Facebook friend commented that she had just read the book – The Help. She commented that she was a good Southern gal and that she could not recall any separate bathrooms for domestic help in the 1960’s when she was a young lady. Then she made a profound statement “I graduated in ’62 and wish I had the foresight to be part of the solution. It saddens me that I just accepted things as they were.” In Church on Sunday we sang ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’. The minister commented that this negro spiritual was a song of two meanings – one was the obvious religious symbol of waiting for the day they would die and receive their reward; the other meaning The rest of the story
