I had a friend recently say to me ‘I won’t do it for me, but I’ll do it for you’. How often do we feel that way? Do you have a self-sacrificing put yourself behind everyone else attitude? If you are female, this may be a common experience for you. It is a special kind of martyrdom. It is also bullshit!
It is quite frankly just another way to abdicate you responsibility for your life. It is giving responsibility for your life to some other individual because if you own it and it goes awry you will have to admit failure.
I read a quote recently; I will paraphrase it for you because I do not recall the exact quote, ‘A bird does not worry about a tree branch breaking because her trust is not in the branch but in her own wings’. By abdicating the reasons for working toward your goals, you are putting your faith not in your wings but in the branch supporting you.
A baby bird does not learn to fly by staying safely in the nest. Neither will you soar without trusting your own motivations.
