Crèche Journey 2023 Day 5

Today’s nativity is your basic old-school flannelgraph. It’s probably 2ftx3ft. It was bound for the garbage when I rescued it and today it adorns my office wall. A sweet reminder that there is wondrous and beautiful new life available, even if we feel like garbage sometimes! #Day5 #nativitycollector #crèchenerd

Today’s nativity isnt mine, nor is it a photo I took. But it is photos of the crèche at Bethlehem Luthern Church this year. I struggle to see how we celebrate the birth of a brown skinned Palestinian baby, and yet are callous about the plight of the children dying there today. Lord, in your mercy! Hear our prayer and spur us to action! #Day4 #nativitycollector #crèchenerd

This nativity is definitely a favorite! I picked it out at the fair trade market in Bethlehem, West Bank when I was there in 2020. Shopping from local artisans and meeting the Palestinian artist make this nativity even more special to me. I loved the wooden figures with local wool at first sight! #Day3 #nativitycollector #crèchenerd

Crèche Journey 2023 Day 1

I haven’t counted to see if I can with my nativity collection, but I’m going to attempt a nativity a day until epiphany This, the first of the season, it’s a photo I took in Bethlehem in January of 2020. It’s by one of my favorite artists Banksy. This nativity dubbed the “Scar of Bethlehem”, shows Jesus’s manger by Israel’s separation barrier, which appears to have been pierced by a blast, creating the shape of a star. Given the current state of Israel and Palestine, this seem very poignant. For me, it represents the way we build walls, and Jesus comes to challenge those walls. But I also think it represents peace, where peace seems impossible. #nativitycollector #crèchenerd
