I’m feeling stuck.

I feel stuck in my writing. I feel stuck in my life.  I just feel stuck.

I am frustrated with how to break my current cycle of being stuck and I although intellectually I think I have a good idea of how to get unstuck. I seem so mired in the minutia that I am unable to propel myself in to any action.

So today I thought I’d share with you my top five ways to get unstuck (take it from me, they’re not easy – but they work):

1) Tell the Truth! Yep, the truth, the WHOLE truth and nothing but the truth; to yourself, to your family, to your friends – but mostly to yourself. Including the parts that feel scary and make you vulnerable when you share. Don’t forget the parts you’ve been repressing or avoiding. Be diplomatic, be kind, be your wise and sensitive self–but state your truth.

2) Look for the pattern. We all have patterns in our lives. Figure out what’s familiar about this situation? Another person abandoning you? Another job you hate? Another situation where you are feeling betrayed or powerless or sad or whatever it is?

Look for the pattern: When in your life have you felt this way before? Find your part in creating the situation, your own issues and contributions. Once you are looking there, your understanding of the situation will shift.

3) Rally the Troops! Gather those you trust and brainstorm ideas or just vent your frustrations. A burden shared is lighter and solutions often become clearer.

4)  Take care of you! In difficult situations, we typically focus on how they (those other crazy people) should be different, how they are wrong.

Bring your attention back to you. What do you need to meet your needs? What do you need to protect your sanity? Take care of your needs, and watch your relationship to the situation change.

5) Move! Moving our bodies gets our minds and emotions moving Take a walk, do some stretches, work out or dance. Put your body in a different place and then see what has shifted. Often this will bring a new perspective and a new idea of how to get unstuck.

Today I am getting unstuck. What are you doing?
