What is your excuse today?

Rationalization it is what we do to allow ourselves to do things we know we shouldn’t or to not do the things we should. For example, I know I should go to the gym. But when the time goes to leave my house and do what I know I should, I rationalize that I have too much work, or that the dog needs me, or any other number of reasons why I can not do what I know I should be doing.

In on of my favorite movies, The Big Chill (affiliate link), Jeff Goldblum as Michael Gold has the following exchange with Tom Berenger’s character Sam Weber:

Michael: I don’t know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They’re more important than sex.
Sam Weber: Ah, come on. Nothing’s more important than sex.
Michael: Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization?

It is something we all do. We do it, as Michael points out, often. Nevertheless, rationalization is just an excuse. It is an excuse with an explanation.  Are you rationalizing away your goals?

Strip away the explanation look at the excuse. Is it a real roadblock? Chances are you will find that what you are using as a roadblock is really a twig on the path.
