“There’s always next year.”
For most baseball fans, that’s a consolation. For a Chicago Cubs fan, it’s practically part of the liturgy.
For more than a century, generations of Cubs fans said those words at the end of another season: wait until next year. Keep believing. Come back in the spring. Then 2016 happened. For one glorious season, next year became this year. And those of us who waited our whole lives for it will never forget what that felt like.
Which, unfortunately, did not permanently exempt us from Cubs heartbreak. So here we are again. I really believed in this 2026 team. I yelled at them. I questioned their life choices. I stayed up ridiculously late on the East Coast.
And now our season is over.
It hurts. Because hope always costs you something. But maybe that’s what being a Cubs fan has always taught us: hope isn’t believing you’re guaranteed the ending you want. Hope is loving something enough to show up again anyway.
They’re still MY team! I’m still a crazy Fan! And yep, there’s next year…
